"Developed countries in the region, such as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, are best poised to develop the wireless Internet opportunity and lead the rest of Asia-Pacific into the next generation of cellular use," said Oliver Tan, Director of The Strategis Group Asia-Pacific.

Due to its large population and low cellular penetration rate, the Asia- Pacific region has a very high growth potential, according to the report. In addition, wireless Internet represents the first exposure to the medium for many in the region. "The majority of the Asia-Pacific inhabitants will first experience the Internet through wireless rather than traditional wired means," said Tan.

The Strategis Group identifies two key drivers affecting wireless Internet developments in Asia-Pacific: competition and third generation (3G) licensing. "We believe that on-going market competition will drive handset prices and airtime tariffs downward, thus lowering the barriers of cellular adoption. The Strategis Group expects to see user-adoption rates for wireless Internet to rise as cellular penetration increases and networks are upgraded," said Tan. "Furthermore, average revenue per user will increase and churn rates decrease due to innovative and attractive subscriber packages being offered by cellular operators."

Third generation licensing developments in this region will also play an important catalytic role in promoting wireless data services as well as establish a framework for both wireless access and content providers in domestic markets.

The Strategis Group's Asia-Pacific Wireless Internet Markets focuses on prospects for wireless Internet in the Asia-Pacific region covering 11 markets: Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

The Strategis Group, a C7 company -- with offices in Washington, DC, London, Singapore, and Sao Paolo -- publishes in-depth market research reports, provides customized consulting services, and supplies continuous information solutions to the broadband, wireless, cable TV, satellite, Internet and competitive telephony industries.
